I am attaching a chopped up sample.
I've done all that, as I always have done, mostly doing footnotes without setting anything. Their style was right out of the box.
The paper needs to be in a CMOS 17/Turabian 9th ed. style: main text double-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman (I hate that font but I didn't get a vote).
The endnotes should be
Internally single-spaced
Between notes, double-spaced.
Times New Roman 10 Pt.
Endnote Reference superscript 10 pt. Times new ROman indented paragraph style first line .5 inches indent.
I got the numbers and the superscript going okay but the indentation is not correct and I had to change from lower-case Roman numerals to Arabic numerals
I've been doing this in MS Word, and the derivative SBL style, for over 20 years. Suddenly, MS Word 2019 doesn't know how to do an endnote. I had a similar struggle with footnotes. Those aren't right either.
If I change the endnote reference to superscript, the entire document went into superscript. Making the note numbers 10 made the endnote text 10 pts. I don't know how this could go more wrong. Thanks.
Ken

- Roman numbers are simply taken from the Latin letters and used for mathematical calculations. Though Arabic number system became popular nowadays and widely used you can still see the Roman numerals in various places. In this article, let us explain the keyboard shortcuts for Roman numerals in Windows and Mac.
- May 15, 2013 When I paste publication text from a Word document which has endnotes (generated using Endnote X4), the numbering of the endnotes changes from Arabic to Roman numerals. Is there any way to maintain Arabic numerals in the endnotes in the process of copying and pasting text in from Word, or to change them back after publication text has been pasted in?
- Open EndNote, and go to the EndNote menu. Select Customizer from the EndNote menu. Check the box in front of the Cite While You Write option. Click next until the Customizer is finished.
- In the MS Word 2010 version it was easy there was a little box under the footnote/endnote section that would lead to a settings dialog box where everything could be changed. That dialog box appears to be hiding in the 2011 version.
Mar 06, 2007 By default, Word uses small Roman numerals for endnote reference marks. If you decide later that you do not want to use the default number format, you don't have to delete the endnote numbers.
GENERAL RULE: WHEN IN DOUBT ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT YOU NEED A CITATION FOR SOMETHING, CITE IT.
Historians use Turabian or the Chicago Manual of Style, both of which provide guidelines for the format of the footnote/endnote citations. PLACEMENT OF THE FOOTNOTE/ENDNOTE ON THE PAGE
Most word processing programs are already set to correctly place footnotes at the bottom of the page or endnotes at the end of your paper. However, you should check to see that the default settings match the discipline’s rules. (For example, MS Word conflicts with the Chicago Manual of Style rules on endnote numbering.)

PLACEMENT OF THE SUPERSCRIPT IN THE TEXT
Leave no space between the superscript (note number) in the text and the word or mark of punctuation it follows. Place the superscript before a dash but after all other marks of punctuation.

Subsequent lines start at the left margin.

Or type the number on the same line; follow it with a period, two spaces, and the note.
REMEMBER!! Single-space within notes; double-space between notes.

LOCATION OF ENDNOTES
Endnotes should be placed in a separate section entitled Notes (not Endnotes) at the end of the entire paper and immediately preceding the bibliography.
Page numbers of text continue running consecutively through Notes. For example, if the last page of text is page 8, then the first page of endnotes is page 9.
Endnotes should use Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, 4), not Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv), which is MS Word’s default for endnotes.
